And The Award Goes To…..

It’s award season, and the celebrities are vying for recognition for their work. There are so many television shows and movies the categories to cover it all keep growing. It’s fun to watch all the glitz and glitter and the excitement surrounding the festivities. When it’s over, there’s always controversy over who won and who lost. I don’t know what the criteria are that form the basis of selecting the winners. I believe that art is subjective, and to decide that one is superior to another would be a tough call. How did the Emmys ignore “Wanda Vision?’

In sports, there’s a clear winner. This team scored more points. This person crossed the finish line first. The tug-of-war ends when one side falls. Music, art, and performance should be judged by the individual. My husband and I will never agree on what constitutes good music. I’m just happy that we each own headphones. There’s an audience for a range of personal tastes. I can’t tell you my favorite band, favorite movie, or favorite artist. I try to be open to all forms of artistic expression except for disco music. I apologize to all of the disco lovers out there, including my husband.

We could decide the winner in art by ticket sales, how many books were sold, or count the likes a video gets. But, I wonder if any of it is necessary? Do we have to have winners and runner-ups in the matter of style and design? Do we need to be motivated to excel in our field of expertise by the promise of a reward? I believe most artists are inspired to achieve a level of success that constitutes an appreciation from their labor. When people take the chance of sharing their ideas, talent, and creativity, they’re hoping that their work will be enjoyed. The promise of a gold statue may be the cherry-on-top, but I’m not sure that’s what the impetus was when they starting creating their body of work.

Art is a constant reflection of the times we live in. It’s through that medium that we find common ground and come together. We dance, sing, read, paint and act out scenes from plays. When we’re dealing with heartache or disappointment, it’s that special song that helps us through. When we need a fun escape, a good story does the trick. When we celebrate a special occasion, we hire entertainment. It’s the hard-working talent that enriches our lives and fills us up with beautiful memories.

Award shows are here to stay, but I think it’s a shame when only one or two movies win everything. It’s the same when different genres of music are pitted against each other. There are so many artists involved. I believe the recognition can be spread around. Reaching this level of success is incredible and inspiring. We should appreciate all the challenges these artists went through to share their talent with us, except anyone who created disco music.
